Preschool

The Preschool Program at Gateway serves three- and four-year-old children who have qualified for placement in a separate education setting to meet their educational needs. Children remain in the preschool setting until they meet the criteria of “school age”, which is determined by the student turning 5 on or before the start of the next school year. There are currently nine preschool classrooms at Gateway (including two NC-Pre-K classrooms) that serve children with a wide variety of needs and abilities.

New faces join our classes throughout the academic year as children are placed according to their needs following evaluation and creation of an Individual Education Plan through the Guilford County Schools EC PreK Department.

In Preschool, we believe that play is the work of the child. Our students have opportunities to develop a wide variety of skills through interaction with toys, sensory experiences, gross motor activities, music, art, and literacy materials. These activities also facilitate growth in the areas of communication, self-help, independence, and motor skills.  Students are provided with adaptations as needed to fully participate in all activities in the preschool curriculum.  Skill development is supported by education staff (teachers, teacher assistants, support staff) and related service providers (therapists: Physical, Occupational, and Speech/Language; additional services such as Vision and Hearing) as indicated on the IEP.
